HERE WE ARE AGAIN!
Here we are – finally we are rehearsing for a new show for the first time in 17 months, as well as preparing our main November play. To start gently we are presenting ‘An Evening of British Comedy’ on 10th and 11th September. Seating will be “Cabaret” style, at tables, with a reduced capacity to give everyone plenty of room. You will be able to bring your own drinks and snacks, as we will not have a bar, or be serving refreshments during the interval. Britain has a rich history of comic songs and monologues. Victorian Music Hall started it, of course, but the baton was picked up by cabarets and night clubs. Noel Coward played Las Vegas many times, and Flanders and Swann were the subversive comedians of the 1960’s, with ‘At the Drop of a Hat’. Monty Python and French & Saunders took the genre on to Television, along with The Two Ronnies and many others. Now YouTube is the fount of such entertainment, and most of the performers, old and new, are there. And the writing is good enough to still be funny today. As Noel Coward said:
“So, when fortune gives us a cup of hemlock to quaff, We just give a slight hiccup and laugh, laugh, laugh.”
