CHERTSEY CLEAN UP GROUP

BY NAOMI DRUCE

It has been a busy few weeks at Chertsey Clean Up with lots of litter picks taking place across the town. The grounds around Chertsey library were visited by our volunteers, and the transformation was fantastic. We then headed to the BMX track where we cleared rubbish and waste from around the wooded area and stream, pulling out an old rusted bike in the process.

We have also teamed up with Runnymede Council to clear and tidy Bourne Meadow, which was previously the allotments behind Riverbourne Car Park. On our first visit in February we removed 960kg of fly tip waste and rubbish, on our second visit, where we focused on the field and fence line, we removed 1 1/4 tons of fly tip and rubbish. We also had a record breaking 30 + volunteers all working at different points of the open space, following all Covid regulations.

It has been amazing to see so many people get involved and really make a difference around our town.  If you are interested in joining our team, we can provide a starter pack to get you going and have plenty of litter pickers available to loan / borrow.

Did you know that you can report fly tipping on a app?  Clear Waste as been set up by people who are tired of their area and our countryside being littered by those who don’t care.  This app will forward the information straight to the council responsible along with getting perpetrators fined, or in some cases jailed.  As a community, we need to take action and this is a way of doing it. Please check your app provided to download.
