CHERTSEY COMBINED CHARITY NEW GRANT: THE WHITE LODGE

Contributed by Malcolm Loveday, Trustee & Mike O’Sullivan, Secretary

The Chertsey Combined Charity is one of Chertsey’s oldest Charities. Grants may be given to local residents and community-based organisations in the original Parish of Chertsey, which includes Addlestone, Chertsey, Lyne, Ottershaw, Rowtown and parts of Woodham.

Grants are given for the reduction of need, hardship and/or distress suffered by local residents. The Charity now disperses approximately £50,000 each year at the discretion of the Board of 13 Trustees who meet four times each year.

Recent Grants

At the Trustees meeting, held in November 2020 via Zoom due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the following grants were agreed:

a) White Lodge Centre -Hydrotherapy Pool Refurbishment.  A grant of £20k towards a major £120k refurbishment of the pool was allocated.  Approximately 500 clients use the pool in over 2,900 assisted pool sessions during the year and 25% of the users come from the old Chertsey parish.

b) Stepgates School Swimming Pool -Changing Facilities: It was agreed to pledge £30,000 to match the amount promised from another source. This was in addition to the £25k given toward the construction of the pool earlier in the year.

c) Christmas Grants 2020: Approximately £13k was allocated grants to a number of social groups and organisations in the area known to the Charity based on £10 per head for club members towards a social event of their choice, e.g. a lunch or an outing etc.  These grants superseded the historically based coal and bread distributed to the poor of the parish at Christmas.

d) Addlestone Canoe Club: The pledge of £15k towards the construction of a new club house was confirmed.
