Living through social isolation recently has highlighted how important it is to have mental stimulation through hobbies and activities. Apart from occupying time, hobbies and activities enable us all to achieve some sense of achievement which can boost self-esteem.
We all need a healthy distraction that takes our thoughts off negative problems or challenges. Crafting helps to unwind and forget about struggles in other areas of life. Hobbies can help to strengthen relationships. Finding things to do with your friends and family besides watching television etc strengthens and encourages lifelong bonds. Creativity helps see connections never seen previously. A hobby can improve skills you never knew you had. Creative skills, design skills, sales skills, communication skills, networking skills, or business skills. Who knows–your next job promotion might be attributed to your creative hobby?
Not everyone wants to turn their hobby into a business, but some can benefit from extra income. And some may decide to quit their regular job and go full-time with their hobby.
Hobbies can often enable us to gift on to others. It can be a special way of saying thank you to others when you give an item made by you.
Valerie Clark is a learning and development professional as well as a Life Coach. She has always gained personal pleasure from seeing others acquire new skills and knowledge. A few years ago, Valerie was coaching a friend to make some window blinds in their new home. After the project was completed, her friend said that she had learnt so much through Valerie’s calm way of teaching. The friend said that she really must use her strengths and help others to learn how to sew!
After careful thought, LavenderLinen was set up, and Valerie delivered workshops in Chertsey on how to use a sewing machine. The workshops were successful and received favourable reviews.

Then came lockdown ………….
Valerie believes that the time is now right to start up the workshops again, to enable people to gain knowledge and new skills. However, to be Covid safe, the workshops will take place in Valerie’s personal sewing studio in Chertsey, on an individual basis, or for two people who are friends. So, if you have been thinking about fresh and new challenges, do seriously consider taking a LavenderLinen workshop and learn how to use a sewing machine.
Who knows where it might lead?
There are various options on what to make during the workshop – perhaps a patchwork or pocket cushion, some PJ shorts, bunting, or a lined tote bag.
