THE HOLME FARM CHILDREN CELEBRATED THE ENVIRONMENT IN THEIR SUMMER HOLIDAYS

By Pippa Tucker-Brown

As the summer draws to a close and the children are back in the routine of school and extracurricular activities, there is the time to reflect on the things that they experienced during the summer holidays. Although this summer was different to last year – with more activities opening up – there were still plenty of opportunities to revisit what they learnt during the period of lockdown life. It has been wonderful to see that what they have discovered about the natural environment around them has still played a big part in their exploring and days out. We asked a few of them about some of their highlights from the summer of 2021; here’s what they had to say.

Alannah (8). It was really good fun taking part in the wild art session that Runnymede Borough Council put on in the Runnymede meadow near the Magna Carta. The lady showed us how to make a stick frame and how to use lots of different things from nature to create a picture. It was really fun to use my imagination foraging for different shapes and colours in the meadow.

Stevie (7) and Jamie (4). We went with our Mum to help the Holme Farm team pull up Himalayan Balsam. The team explained it is a bit like a weed but once it’s pulled out, it puts good stuff back into the ground. Our favourite part was the pulling – some of the weeds were taller than us – and we liked climbing up on the huge pile.

Nina (8). We went with friends to Virginia Water lake and we walked six miles as we made a couple of wrong turns by mistake. Luckily, we found a beautiful lake covered in waterlilies which we all stopped at and admired. The pink flowers are just so pretty.

It’s evident that it’s not just the pleasures of being outside, but also the facts and hazards of nature, that are increasingly informing children’s knowledge. As we become more and more conscious of the threat to our environment, we need to harness this passion and enthusiasm from the young to preserve our incredible planet.
