Shooting Star Children’s Hospices cares for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families, across Surrey and London. The local charity is a lifeline to over 700 families and the demand for their care service is forever increasing.
Their bespoke support is free of charge to families and includes a comprehensive range of therapies for the whole family, specialist nursing care and respite, end of life care and bereavement support. The charity has two purpose-built hospices, Christopher’s in Guildford and Shooting Star House in Hampton, offering the very best in specialist facilities and equipment in a comfortable, homely and friendly environment.

The unprecedented circumstances of the pandemic had an undeniable impact on the charity affecting their ability to fundraise and the way they could provide their vital services. They had to make the difficult decision to temporarily close one of their hospices from a care perspective, and prioritise those in most need, providing end-of-life care and emergency respite at their Guildford-based hospice, Christopher’s. To remain connected and continue to support as many families as possible, Shooting Star Children’s Hospices launched their virtual hospice which includes virtual groups like the young group for supported teens held via Zoom, and an online hub on their website full of activities and resources. They also launched their Family
Support Line, run by their dedicated team of Family Support Workers. The line ensures families have access to advice, support and information about their services, as well as being there for any families who simply need someone to talk to, which has been particularly invaluable during the current pandemic.

“We called the Family Support Line during lockdown last year. We were in crisis and our son had been extremely unwell. They were so empathic, gentle and kind. We will always be grateful for their support last year and feel secure in the knowledge that they are there still if we find ourselves in crisis again.” Supported mum, Helena.
It costs £8.8 million a year to maintain the current level of care, and with only a small percentage of income coming from statutory funding, Shooting Star Children’s Hospices are reliant on the generosity of the local community to keep their vital service running.
With restrictions lifting, there are plenty of ways you can support them – from a simple donation, taking on a challenge event like their much-loved Guildford Sunrise Walk in October, to a spot of retail therapy in one of their shops.
