MAYOR OF RUNNYMEDE

ELAINE GILL

On 22nd October 2020, I was so honoured and privileged to become Mayor of Runnymede. The support shown by all Councillors across Runnymede has been quite overwhelming.

On my first day in the role, I had two events, one was the ground breaking ceremony of a building project in my own Ward of Thorpe.

This is by Eden Health to provide retirement living.  For me the two excellent parts of the project are that Eden Health want local residents to be involved and use the facilities. Also the listed buildings are being brought back to their former glory and will be there for many more years to come.

Remembrance Sunday is a very important date for me in my calendar. My Father was a soldier in REME during WW11 and rarely spoke of the six years he was away from his family.

Fortunately he returned, but I cannot imagine how my Grandmother must have felt during those times.

Due to Covid restrictions this year it has not been easy to commemorate this special time, but I am pleased that I was able to lay a wreath at the war memorial in Chertsey to remember all those who never returned from conflicts.

Please all keep safe and keep well.
