DR BEN SPENCER MP

Many local residents may be aware of the fantastic work of local resident Ronnie Kendall to try and turn derelict land in Woodham into a community workshop and gardens. This project, which has been an aspiration for the last 3 years, has taken real strides this year. Following a meeting with DEFRA Minister Rebecca Pow, I was delighted that the Department, who own the land, have agreed to consider a business case for the project. The project has also gained support from Runnymede Borough Council, who have agreed to assist Mr Kendall in his efforts.
With a seeming unending enthusiasm and work ethic, Mr Kendall, supported by an ever increasing number of local supporters and his borough councillors, is now not only preparing this business case but also exploring the many opportunities this project could bring.
As part of these efforts I was happy to discuss the project with St Peter’s Hospital senior management and the CEO of Surrey and Borders NHS Trust, who oversee our local mental health service provision. I believe there are many opportunities for this project to provide help and support through partnership with a number of organisations and was delighted that they are both keen to learn more about the project and the opportunities it will bring.
I will continue to work with DEFRA to encourage ongoing and open dialogue and will support Mr Kendall’s team when presenting the business case to the Department. Community projects such as this are a fantastic reminder of the difference we can all make when we work together. I wish to thank Mr Kendall and all who have supported him in this endeavour, and look forward to further progress in 2021 when we can hopefully meet in person to celebrate our success.
