TACKLING THE LITTER PROBLEM

This is an issue we will cover regularly and look to the community to find ways to tackle this problem. Chertsey Life welcome your thoughts and comments along with any ideas for the Council and the community on how to change this behaviour.

Sean Barnes and Chris Dulley, Environmental Officers for RBC write:  ‘The Council works hard to deal with the litter in our parks and streets, it’s a key part of how we support local people and enhance our environment, and our staff are doing a good job in very difficult circumstances. The warm weather combined with increased working from home has resulted in a significant increase in the number of people using our parks and being out and about, which is welcome, but does result in additional pressure on our workforce to collect a greater volume of waste.

We have employed an additional crew since March to empty public bins, and we deal with litter collections on daily and weekly schedules across the borough. The majority of residents take their waste away, but a small number of others leave it in our parks and we would ask them to think how their mess might impact on other people’s ability to enjoy the same space.  We also very much welcome locally organised litter picks, and our councillors often set these up. If you would like to organise one, contact your local ward councillor.

Our message to residents is enjoy the warmer weather but please take home your rubbish home or use the public bins.  Runnymede have tried signs in the past but frustratingly these have ended up being vandalised or taken down so we use other methods to get the point across including social media.
